“Seek advice from a pro: the job search

Friday 14 November 2008 · 1 Comment

Do not try to do a job search alone. You need input from others. But be selective in who you add to the team. Friends and family generally will not tell you that you need to update your wardrobe or provide you with ways to improve your interview skills, so you need to find someone who is trusted, yet can provide criticism without harming a relationship.

Consultants and personal career coaches are available for getting you into shape. These are generally people who are well connected in the human resource community and can help you prepare for interviews and give you names of people to contact for informational interviews.

If you have been laid off, your company may provide outplacement services that include a career coach. If not, contact a college or university that has human resource extension courses. These courses are frequently taught by people who also consult. Generally, you’re trying to find someone who will provide you with several months of their time and knowledge.
